Dracula’s castle? The true story
In 1377, King Louis I of Hungary granted the Saxons of Brașov the right to build, at their own expense, a stone fortress at Bran, on the trade route to Wallachia. The castle was completed in 1388.
In 1920, the city of Brașov gave it to Queen Marie, who made it her favourite retreat. Confiscated by the communist regime in 1948, the castle was returned to her heirs in 2006 and is today a private museum, with the queen’s furniture and collections.
The Dracula connection is a tourist legend: there is no evidence that Bram Stoker ever saw the castle or that Vlad the Impaler (Vlad Țepeș) had any significant link with it. The atmosphere, however, is exactly what you would expect.
A hilltop peasant fortress, looking out to the Bucegi
Râșnov Fortress was built as a refuge for the people of the surrounding area in times of invasion. The oldest surviving stone walls date from the 14th century, and the first record of it is linked to a Tatar attack in 1335.
From the fortress you can see the whole of Țara Bârsei, with the Bucegi and Piatra Craiului on the horizon. The well cut into the rock, almost 100 metres deep, was dug between 1623 and 1640.
The fortress is under restoration. Before you go, check which areas are open; we can help.
