New Year’s Eve in Bușteni 2027: a Romanian mountain guide
New Year’s Eve in the Romanian mountains has something a city New Year never will: snow outside, the quiet after midnight and the morning of 1 January with the Bucegi in your window. We see it up close every year in Bușteni, so we’ve gathered here the questions we’re asked most often by people who want to spend New Year’s Eve 2027 in the mountains.
Why spend New Year’s Eve in Bușteni
Of all the resorts in the Prahova Valley, Bușteni has the most spectacular view of the Bucegi: Caraiman, the Heroes’ Cross and Coștila are right there above the town. It’s close to Bucharest, has its own ski slope, Kalinderu, and sits 8 km from Sinaia and 5 km from Azuga, where you’ll find more slopes. And if it snows over the holidays, everything looks exactly the way you picture New Year’s Eve in the Carpathians – or Revelion, as Romanians call it.
New Year’s Eve in a hotel or a private villa?
In the Prahova Valley, New Year’s Eve is usually spent in one of two ways: in a hotel or guesthouse, with a set menu, a live band and tables shared with other guests, or in a villa rented as a whole, just for you, your friends or your family.
| Hotel or guesthouse with a programme | Private villa | |
|---|---|---|
| Who you celebrate with | Other guests, in the same room | Only your friends or your family |
| The menu | Set menu, chosen by the hotel | Cook whatever you like or order in |
| The music | The hotel’s band or DJ | Your own playlist, karaoke |
| The schedule | Fixed times for dinner and entertainment | You decide everything |
| The children | An adapted programme, or none at all | They go to bed when they want, in their own room |
If you want New Year’s Eve without an imposed programme, a private villa is the right choice. If you’d rather not have to organise anything, a hotel package with dinner included may be more convenient. We say this openly, because we rent our villas without meals included: we can prepare breakfast on request, and every villa has a fully equipped kitchen.
New Year’s Eve in a private villa with hot tub in Bușteni
You arrive on 30 or 31 December, light the barbecue or cook in the kitchen, and in the afternoon you slip into the hot tub or the sauna, with snow all around. In the evening you put on your own music, and at midnight you step outside with the champagne: the sky above Bușteni usually fills with fireworks from all over the resort.
On 1 January nobody rushes you: a late breakfast, a walk in the forest, then an afternoon in the salt room, breathing salty air after the festive days.
What to do on 1 and 2 January
- Kalinderu ski slope, right in Bușteni, a few minutes by car, with a chairlift, night skiing and snow cannons. Whether it’s open depends on snow and weather.
- The Bușteni–Babele cable car, for the Sphinx and the Babele rocks on the Bucegi plateau. In winter it sometimes stops because of the wind, so check on the morning itself.
- Cantacuzino Castle in Bușteni, known from the Netflix series “Wednesday”, and Peleș Castle in Sinaia, 8 km away. Opening hours change over the holidays, so check them beforehand.
- Walks in the snow, straight from the edge of the forest, and sledging with the children.
- Wellness: the salt room, the sauna and the hot tub, after a day outdoors.
Getting to Bușteni for New Year’s Eve
In the days before New Year’s Eve the DN1 is very busy. Traffic crawls, especially between Comarnic and Bușteni, and queues can stretch for several kilometres. Most visitors from abroad fly into Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport (Otopeni), about 2 hours by car from Bușteni, and we can arrange a private transfer from the airport on request. A few tips from us:
- Set off early, ideally a day or two before 31 December, and in the morning rather than the afternoon.
- Check the traffic before you leave. On busy days the police recommend alternative routes, for example the A3 to Ploiești, then the DN1A via Cheia.
- Consider the train. Bușteni station is a few minutes from the villas, and we can arrange your transfer on request.
- Do the big shop beforehand or when you arrive, not on 31 December, when the shops in the resort are packed. You can also order cooked food through Glovo, delivered straight to the villa.
What to bring
- Swimwear, for the hot tub, sauna and salt room.
- Winter boots and warm clothes for midnight outdoors.
- Winter kit for the car: winter tyres, and snow chains if it snows.
- Your playlist and your favourite board games.

Usually there is no public New Year’s Eve event in the Prahova Valley resorts, with a stage and live acts like in the big cities. The parties take place in hotels, guesthouses and villas, and at midnight the sky above Bușteni fills with fireworks. If the town hall does announce an event, you’ll find it on its official pages in December.

For 3 nights, Vila IRIS comes to roughly 1,750 lei per person with a full group. The price is for accommodation only, without meals.
When should I book New Year’s Eve in the Romanian mountains?
As early as you can, ideally in October or November. The Prahova Valley is one of the most sought-after places in Romania for New Year’s Eve, and villas rented as a whole, to a single group, are the first to go.
How do I get to Bușteni for New Year’s Eve without spending hours in traffic?

The train is a good alternative: Bușteni station is a few minutes from the villas, and we can arrange your transfer on request.
What can we do on 1 January in Bușteni?
A walk through the snowy forest, a few runs on the Kalinderu slope in Bușteni (it has night skiing and snow cannons, if the season has started), a visit to Cantacuzino Castle or Peleș Castle in Sinaia, once you’ve checked the holiday opening hours, and an afternoon in the salt room, sauna and hot tub.
