10 Things to Do in Bușteni: A Local Hosts' Guide

Local guide · Bușteni & Bucegi

This isn't a generic top ten, copied from ten other websites. It's the list of things to do in Bușteni that we actually give guests who ask us “what shall we do tomorrow?” – along with everything we've learnt about each place, year after year.

In short

The most important things to see in Bușteni range from Cantacuzino Castle (5 minutes from the centre) and the Bucegi plateau with Babele and the Sphinx (reached by cable car) to Peleș Castle in Sinaia (15 minutes away) and easy trails such as the one to Urlătoarea Waterfall.

For a weekend, we recommend 3-4 sights combined with time to relax – not all of them at once. Best for families with children: Cantacuzino Castle and Urlătoarea Waterfall. For couples: the Sphinx (planned around the cable car timetable) and Caraiman Monastery, for some peace and quiet.

If you've made it to Bușteni, you've probably come for the mountains, the fresh air and a few quiet days. There's a particular moment – usually on the first evening, when you step out of the car and pause for a second in the garden – when the Bucegi seem to move closer to you, not the other way round. It isn't a tourist-brochure image; it really happens: the almost vertical rock faces of Caraiman rise straight from the edge of town, and the silence that follows is nothing like the silence back home. That's why Bușteni has remained, for generations, one of the best-loved mountain destinations in Romania – not necessarily for any single sight, but for the way the whole town sits on the border between civilisation and wilderness.

Beyond the views you can see from the garden, the town and its surroundings hide places that are genuinely worth discovering – some just a step away, others a good hour's walk up the mountain. We've written the list below exactly as we would recommend it to a guest who asks us at check-in “what shall we do tomorrow?”. Not in order of distance, but in the order in which, in our experience, most people really discover them – a guide designed for those looking for accommodation in Bușteni who want to know, honestly, what there is to see in Bușteni on a holiday of a few days, not just a list of names.

What makes Bușteni special as a base is how much is packed in: you rarely find, in one small town, a historic castle, direct cable car access to the plateau of a massif rising above 2,500 m, a monastery with a story, an internationally certified ski slope and a second royal castle just 15 minutes' drive away. You don't have to move from one place to stay to another to see it all – you can stay in one place and explore in ever-wider circles.

01
Cantacuzino Castle

Cantacuzino Castle, a Bușteni sight and filming location for the Wednesday series
Cantacuzino Castle, Bușteni – filming location for the Netflix series Wednesday

Built between 1901 and 1911 for Prince Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino, known as “the Nabob”, the castle blends the Neo-Romanian and Neo-Brâncovenesc styles and stands on the site of an old family hunting lodge. It was nationalised in 1948, served as a sanatorium, and after 2010 it reopened to the public as a museum and cultural centre.

It's worth visiting for the architecture, for the 3.5-hectare garden with views straight onto the Bucegi and, more recently, for an unexpected reason: the “Nevermore Academy” scenes of the Netflix series Wednesday were filmed here – a detail that children and teenagers in the families who stay with us absolutely love.

In our experience, those who go early in the morning, right after opening, best avoid the weekend crowds and still have time for a coffee on the terrace afterwards. Check the current opening hours on the castle's official website before you set off.

After a few hours at Cantacuzino Castle, many of our guests choose to unwind in the heated outdoor pool or the private hot tub at Forest Retreat – just a few minutes away, close enough that the visit feels less like a trip and more like a morning stroll.

Time needed1.5-2 hours

02
Bușteni Cable Car

Bușteni Cable Car, the way up to the Bucegi plateau
The Bușteni Cable Car, the quick gateway to the Bucegi plateau

The cable car climbs from the resort (approx. 880 m above sea level) straight up to the Bucegi plateau, at over 2,200 m, in about 15 minutes – one of the fastest “teleports” from the bustle of town to alpine air anywhere in the Prahova Valley.

It's especially worthwhile if it's your first visit to the Bucegi and you want to see Babele and the Sphinx without a long mountain hike. The temperature difference between the bottom and the plateau can be surprising – we've had guests set off from Bușteni in a T-shirt and come back talking about a blizzard up at 2,200 m, so we always recommend an extra layer in your rucksack, whatever the season.

The cable car is sensitive to wind and can stop without much warning – check the timetable and the weather on the plateau on the morning of your visit itself, not the day before.

Time needed15 min up + at least 1-2 hours at the top
Opening hoursVary by season, sensitive to wind - check on the day of your visit

03
Babele

Babele, a sight near Bușteni in the Bucegi Mountains
Babele - rock formations on the Bucegi plateau

Rock formations (the name means “the Old Women”) shaped by the wind and by repeated freeze-thaw cycles over thousands of years. They are one of the most photographed landscapes in the Carpathians, and the areas around them are fenced off for protection, so admiring them from a distance is part of the experience rather than a limitation.

You can get there either by cable car from Bușteni, straight to the plateau, or on foot along the Jepii Mici trail – a hike officially estimated at about 4 hours 30 minutes, of medium-to-difficult grade, and not suitable for anyone without mountain experience or proper gear. For most of our guests, the cable car remains the natural choice if they also want to see the Sphinx the same day without a full day of climbing on foot.

Time needed30-45 minutes on the plateau

04
The Sphinx

The Sphinx, a sight near Bușteni in the Bucegi Mountains
The Bucegi Sphinx, a few steps from Babele

A few minutes' walk from Babele, the same natural erosion has created a formation that, seen from a certain angle, bears a striking resemblance to a human profile – hence the many legends attributed to it over time.

Whether you love legends or simply spectacular scenery, it's worth seeing at least once. Some of our guests swear that, from a certain angle and at a certain time of day, the profile really does look like an ancient face; others admit honestly that they can't see anything. Both reactions are part of the experience.

Plan your visit around the cable car timetable – check the time of the last car down before you go up, and make sure you can get back down safely, whatever time you reach the top.

05
Heroes' Cross on Caraiman

Heroes' Cross on Caraiman, a sight near Bușteni, seen from above
The Heroes' Cross on Caraiman – the world's tallest cross on a mountain summit (Guinness World Records)

Built between 1926 and 1928 on the initiative of the Romanian Royal House, in memory of the Romanian heroes who fell in the First World War. The cross itself is about 28 metres tall, while the whole monument, including its base, reaches about 39.5 metres, at an altitude of 2,291 m. Since 2013-2014, it has been officially recognised by Guinness World Records as the world's tallest cross on a mountain summit.

You can admire it perfectly well from below, in Bușteni, without any effort – on clear days it's easy to see from the street. For those who want to reach it, there are several route options of different lengths and difficulty, starting either from the Babele cable car station or from the Caraiman mountain hut (Cabana Caraiman).

We don't recommend choosing a route based only on the estimated time you find online. Conditions on the ridge change quickly, and some sections require mountain experience and proper gear. Before you set off, check the current route and weather conditions with Salvamont (in Romanian), the mountain rescue service, and make sure you have proper hiking gear, whatever the season.

Time neededVaries with the route you choose – check current times with Salvamont

06
Urlătoarea Waterfall

Urlătoarea Waterfall, a sight in Bușteni
Urlătoarea Waterfall – an easy trail, depending on your starting point and the weather

Formed where the Comorilor Valley stream meets the Urlătoarea Mică, the waterfall drops 15 metres and is one of the most accessible natural attractions in the Bucegi – the trail, waymarked with a red dot, starts near the cable car in Bușteni.

A generally easy trail, suitable for families with older children, along a wide path with just one steeper section close to the waterfall. The official estimate for the full trail is about 1 hour 40 minutes (one way), but the real time depends on your exact starting point, your walking pace and the weather – it can differ noticeably from this estimate, especially after rain or in the cold season, when the path can be slippery or partly covered in snow. We recommend footwear with good grip and checking the weather before you set off.

In our experience, guests who do this walk in the morning enjoy the pool or the hot tub in the evening in a completely different way – not as an indulgence, but as a well-earned reward.

Time neededOfficial estimate ~1h40 (one way), varying with starting point, pace and weather
Opening hoursDepends on the season and the weather – check before you set off

07
Peleș Castle

Peleș Castle in Sinaia, a sight near Bușteni
Peleș Castle, Sinaia – about 15 minutes from Forest Retreat Villas

Although it's in Sinaia rather than Bușteni, Peleș is just 15 minutes from us and is, quite simply, a place we recommend to every guest who comes to the Prahova Valley. The summer residence of King Carol I, built at the end of the 19th century, was the first fully electrified building in Europe in its day.

The interior, with more than 160 rooms and impressive art collections, justifies half a day on its own – especially if you add a short visit to Pelișor Castle, which stands next door.

Book your tickets in advance, especially at weekends and in the summer season, when the queue at the entrance can last more than an hour – check availability on the official Peleș Castle website.

If you've already visited Cantacuzino Castle, the difference is obvious: Peleș is bigger, more richly furnished and more “royal” – you are literally walking through a king's apartments. Cantacuzino, on the other hand, remains more intimate and less crowded, with far more open grounds to explore. We recommend both to many of our guests, on the same day or on consecutive days, precisely for the contrast between them.

Time needed1.5-2 hours, or half a day with Pelișor
Opening hoursVary by season - check the official timetable
Distance from Forest Retreat~15 minutes by car
Recommended forEveryone - a must for history lovers

08
Caraiman Monastery

Caraiman Monastery in Bușteni, inside the church
Caraiman Monastery – peace and quiet at 900 m

Founded in 1998 on the initiative of Father Gherontie Puiu, following a dream in which the Mother of God showed him the exact spot where it should be built – a fir tree with six branches, next to running water. At 900 m above sea level, it is one of the highest monastic settlements in Romania.

A place of real tranquillity, with a direct view of the Heroes' Cross and a small monastery farm in the courtyard, where children can see hens, peacocks, rabbits and ponies up close – one more reason we recommend it to families, not only to those seeking quiet reflection.

Time needed30-45 minutes
Access~10 minutes on foot, along a maintained path near the cable car
Distance from Forest RetreatA few minutes by car + a short walk uphill
Recommended forFamilies (the animal farm) and couples (peace and quiet)

09
Kalinderu Ski Slope

Kalinderu Ski Slope in Bușteni in winter
Kalinderu Ski Slope – skiing and snowboarding in winter, tubing and mountain biking in summer

The name comes from Ioan Kalinderu, administrator of the Royal Crown Estates in the time of Carol I. Certified by the International Ski Federation (FIS), the slope is 1.3 km long with a vertical drop of 370 m – suitable both for beginners and for intermediate skiers.

In winter it becomes one of the most popular places for skiing and snowboarding in the Prahova Valley, with floodlights for night skiing. In summer, the same slope turns into a space for grass tubing, and the surrounding area remains excellent for mountain biking.

After a day on the slope, with legs tired from skiing or from climbing the grass, the villa's warm hot tub becomes, by far, the most appreciated moment of the evening – almost every guest who chooses this combination tells us so.

Time needed2-4 hours (skiing) or 1-2 hours (summer activities)
Opening hoursWinter season December-March; summer for tubing/MTB
Distance from Forest RetreatA few minutes by car
Recommended forFamilies in winter, friends/couples in summer

10
Bucegi Natural Park

Bucegi Natural Park near Bușteni, rhododendron flowers
Bucegi Natural Park – the setting that ties together all the sights above
The setting that ties them all together

All the sights above – Babele, the Sphinx, the Heroes' Cross, Urlătoarea Waterfall – are in fact part of the same Bucegi Natural Park, one of the oldest protected areas in Romania. If you love nature, this is the main reason to come to Bușteni: spectacular trails, clean air and views you never forget, however many times you see them.

The time needed varies enormously – from a stroll of a few hours to whole days of hiking for the fittest. We recommend choosing a single trail per day, not a whole list, especially if you're coming with children or with people who have no mountain experience.

The park is home to karst landscapes and glacial features, protected species of alpine flora and, in the more remote areas, wildlife – including bears, which is why the trail signs in the area explicitly warn visitors. It's no cause for concern if you stick to the marked trails and don't leave food unsecured in your rucksack, but it's good to know in advance, especially if you're walking with children.

Practical tips that apply to every sight

Besides the specific recommendations above, there are a few things we tell almost all our guests, whichever sight they choose to visit:

  • Take an extra layer, even in summer. The temperature difference between Bușteni and the Bucegi plateau can exceed 10-15°C, especially when the wind is blowing.
  • Check opening hours on the day of your visit, not the day before – the cable car in particular is sensitive to wind and can stop without warning.
  • Park early at weekends. The car parks near the cable car and Cantacuzino Castle fill up quickly in peak season.
  • Phone signal weakens on the plateau. Download offline maps or note down your route before you go up.
  • Don't underestimate the “easy” trails. Even the Urlătoarea Waterfall trail has a steeper section near the end – footwear with good soles makes all the difference.
Mountain safety

The Bucegi Mountains are beautiful, but unforgiving of improvisation. Before any mountain trail (not just the “hard” ones), check the latest weather forecast and trail conditions directly with Salvamont (in Romanian), wear suitable gear and footwear whatever the season, follow the official waymarks and don't set out on an unfamiliar trail if the weather is forecast to be unsettled. Phone signal is weak on the plateau – let someone know which trail you've chosen and when you expect to be back.

How to combine the things to do in Bușteni over a weekend

So that this isn't just a list, here's how we, as hosts, would plan a 3-day weekend around these sights – without turning your holiday into a sightseeing marathon.

Day Our suggestion
Friday Arrival, check-in, a quiet evening - no sightseeing, just settling in
Saturday Morning: Cantacuzino Castle · Lunch in town · Afternoon: cable car up to Babele and the Sphinx (weather permitting)
Sunday Morning: Urlătoarea Waterfall (easy trail) · Optional, on the way home: Peleș Castle, in Sinaia

Of course, the pace varies from group to group – some prefer to save the cable car for a future visit and add Caraiman Monastery or the Kalinderu Ski Slope instead. Both options work equally well.

Frequently asked questions

How much time do you need to see all the sights in Bușteni?

Realistically, on a weekend of 2-3 nights you can comfortably cover 3-4 sights, with time to relax in between. For all 10, including mountain trails, you need at least 4-5 days, or several visits in different seasons – Babele and the Heroes' Cross look completely different in winter than in summer.

Do you need a car for these sights in Bușteni?

For Cantacuzino Castle, Caraiman Monastery and the Kalinderu Ski Slope, a car helps but is not essential – they are a few minutes' walk or drive from the centre of Bușteni. For Peleș Castle, in Sinaia, a car is useful, although there are train options too. For Babele, the Sphinx and the Heroes' Cross, you go up either by cable car or on foot.

Which sight in Bușteni is best for children?

In our experience, Urlătoarea Waterfall and Cantacuzino Castle are the favourites of families with children – the trail to the waterfall is short and easy, and the castle has generous gardens and a story that even younger children can easily follow. In winter, the Kalinderu Ski Slope is ideal for first ski lessons.

Does the Bușteni cable car run all year round?

The cable car runs for most of the year, but the timetable varies with the season, and it can be temporarily shut down because of strong wind or technical maintenance. Check the official timetable and the weather conditions on the plateau on the day of your visit itself.

Is the trail to Urlătoarea Waterfall difficult?

It is one of the most accessible trails in the Bucegi, suitable for children too. The official estimate is about 1 hour 40 minutes (one way), but the real time depends on your starting point, your walking pace and the weather.

How close are these sights to Forest Retreat Villas?

Cantacuzino Castle is about 5 minutes away by car, and Peleș Castle, in Sinaia, about 15 minutes. The cable car, the Kalinderu Ski Slope and the starting point of the Urlătoarea Waterfall trail are all a few minutes from our villas.

How many days are enough for a visit to Bușteni?

For a first taste of the area, 2-3 days are enough for 3-4 sights, with time to relax in between. For a full holiday, with mountain trails and a trip to Peleș Castle, we recommend 4-5 days.

What is the best time of year to visit Bușteni?

Summer (June-September) is ideal for mountain trails and the outdoor pool. Winter (December-March) turns the area into a ski destination, with the Kalinderu Ski Slope and the Bucegi plateau covered in snow. Spring and autumn are the quietest seasons, with the fewest crowds on the trails.

Can you reach Babele by cable car from Bușteni?

Yes, the Bușteni cable car goes straight up to the Bucegi plateau, just a few minutes' walk from Babele and the Sphinx; the ride takes about 15 minutes.

How long does a visit to Cantacuzino Castle take?

A full visit, including the grounds and the art gallery, takes between 1.5 and 2 hours. If you add a coffee on the terrace, you can plan for up to 2.5-3 hours.

Is Bușteni a good destination for children?

Yes. Cantacuzino Castle, Urlătoarea Waterfall and Caraiman Monastery (with its little farm) are the favourites of families with young children. For older children, the cable car and the easy trails on the Bucegi plateau are also a good fit.

We don't recommend these places because they “have to” be on a list. We recommend them because, year after year, they're exactly what our guests ask us about – and exactly where we send them with confidence.

Where to stay in Bușteni?

After a day spent exploring the Bucegi, the best moment is coming back to somewhere peaceful. At Forest Retreat Luxury Villas, private villas await you, with a heated outdoor pool, hot tub, sauna and spectacular views of the Bucegi Mountains – accommodation close to the Bușteni Cable Car and just a few minutes from almost all the sights above.

Whether you're coming as a couple, with your family or with friends, we'll be delighted to host you and, as always, to recommend the places in the area that best suit your group - for a holiday in Bușteni built around what you actually want to do, not around a list of boxes to tick.

One thing we've noticed consistently, season after season: the happiest guests aren't the ones who tick off all 10 sights in a single weekend, but those who choose 2-3 and leave the rest of their time for peace and quiet – a longer coffee on the terrace, an afternoon nap, an evening with no plans at all. Bușteni is patient with you: there's no need to rush to “finish” it.
